Schemas

A Schema is a repeated pattern of behaviour that allows children to explore and express developing ideas within their play and exploration

The repetitive actions of schemas within play allow children to construct meaning in what they are doing.

In order to better understand this process, we need to remember that children use play to develop an understanding of the world around them. It is through play that children problem solve, question, predict, imagine and speculate.

A basic knowledge and understanding of schemas can give practitioners a more in depth view of their observations on children, which compliments their ability to assess and plan appropriately.

Some of the most common schemas observed include:

Trajectory

An interest in how people and things move and how subsequently children can affect that movement

Rotation

An interest in anything that rotates, spins, turns!

Enclosing

Enclosers love creating a safe cosy space to hide themselves or their toys
